ALEXANDRE BOUGAULT (active 1890s-1910s) Selection of 47 orientalist photographs of Algeria. Including intimate, winding street scenes; sublime desert landscapes utilizing a dramatic play of light and shade; women in encampments and interacting together (including smoking); men and women in traditional dress; children playing; men on camels and praying; lush oases; striking portraits; and much more. Sepia-toned silver prints, the images measuring 11x4 3/8 to 9 3/4x11 3/4 inches (27.9x11.1 to 24.8x29.8 cm.), and the reverse, approximately 29 with a Bougault blind stamp (usually the small oval) on recto, and nearly all with a number or caption identifying the location or scene, in pencil, on verso. Circa 1890-1915
The original collector of these remarkable photographs was Theodore Stanichet, who was born in France in the early 1840s. He traveled to Algeria, notably Biskra, where he apparently acquired the photographs. The suite was given to Angelica (Gail) LaPasta, Theodore's granddaughter-in-law, as a wedding gift in 1910, and has remained in the family.
