Spurred by the death of Queen Joanna II of Naples in February of 1435 and believing himself to be the rightful ruler of Naples, Alfonso fought René of Anjou, to whom the Queen had bequeathed the crown. As part of his campaign, Alfonso conquered Gaeta the same year.
