Signed by the commanding officer, J.W. Dickinson, and Cartwell S. French 1st Lieutenant in the 29th Mass. Volunteers. Creases where folded several times; paper evenly toned. the discharge for corporal john alford, a black soldier from company "f" of the 21st regiment, u. s. colored troops. John Alford enrolled on 3 August, 1864 to serve a period of three years. He is listed in Moebs (Black Soldiers, Black Sailors, Black Ink), page 524 as a "Farmer, having joined the service in Jacksonville, Florida."
