Polish-born Wolmark grew up in England, where he became a stage designer and painter. He is considered one of the pioneers of British Modernism. This poster "exemplifies Wolmark's abstract pattern-making. The strong color contrasts are reminiscent of his painting, which owed much to the vivid simplifications of artists like Van Gogh and Gauguin" (Darracot xxi).
