ALFRED CHOUBRAC (1853-1902) ALCAZAR D'HIVER. Circa 1895.
47 1/2x31 inches, 121x79 cm. Verger & Baret, Paris.
Condition A- / B+: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds.
Although unsigned this is clearly the work of Choubrac. While serving as the Art Director at Appel he also continued working for some private clients for whom he designed posters (printed by different printers). The Alcazar d'Hiver was cafe-concert that never enjoyed the same kind of success as the more famous Alcazar d'Ete that was in fact owned by the same man. But their advertising made no mistake about what was being served up within the cabaret's walls, literally presenting a coquette on a platter, with the suggestion of music in the background, much to the delight of a young dandy who is biting the tip of his cane in anticipation. In spite of this, and other good promotional designs, the Alcazar d'Hiver was demolished in 1902.
