ALFRED CHOUBRAC (1853-1902) FOLIES BERGERE / SPECTACLE VARIE.
71 7/8x53 3/4 inches. F. Appel, Paris.
Condition B+/B: restored losses, repaired tears and creases in margins and image. Two sheets.
The Choubrac brothers, Alfred and Leon (1847-1885), were pioneers in the field of color lithography. They primarily worked to advertise circuses and cafe-concerts. After his brother's premature death, Alfred became the director of the large Parisian printing house Appel, an appointment that was heavily advertised at the time. While at Appel, Choubrac designed some of his best posters. This rare Folies-Bergere poster focuses on a shapely attendee. Not only viewers, but even one of the clowns on stage is staring at her, in a lasivious manner that is bound to distract him from his hat-throwing act.
