ALFRED H. MAURER
Nude in Chase's Tenth Street Studio.

Oil on canvas, circa 1895. 410x520 mm; 16x20 1/2 inches. Signed in oil, upper left recto.

Ex-collection Eugene Paul Ullman Estate, a friend of the artist; Pensler Galleries, Washington, D.C.

Maurer (1868-1932) was born in New York, the son of German-born lithographer, and worked early on with his father before studying with the sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward and painter William Merritt Chase during the mid 1890s.

This early work is a view of Chase's New York studio made by Maurer during his training years. Chase's studio, in the famous Tenth Street Studio Building and formerly the studio space belonging to Albert Bierstadt (see lot 1), was as much an artist's work area as a social meeting space and focal point for the sophisticated and fashionable members of the New York art world of the late 19th century.
