Painter and educator Alfred L. Bright was a professor at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio, where he founded the Africana studies program in 1970. He was the first African American full time faculty member at the university, and taught there until 1987. Born and raised in Youngstown, Bright received an MFA from Kent State University in 1965. He exhibited his art in more than 100 solo exhibitions over his career. His paintings are today in numerous institutional collections including Kent State University Gallery, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Harmon and Harriet Kelly Collection of African American Art, Canton Museum of Art, Roanoke Museum of Fine Arts and Northeastern University.
