ALFRED NATHANIEL OPPENHEIM (1873-?) INTERNATIONALE LUFTSCHIFFAHRT AUSSTELLUNG. 1909.
353/4x231/2 inches. Wusten & Co., Frankfurt.
Condition A: minor repaired tear in left margin. Framed.
Although the French virtually pioneered the concept of the air show, the Germans were not far behind them. After the exhibition at Reims, three important meetings were organized in Frankfurt, Cologne and Berlin. Here, a yellow airship, a white bi-plane and a yellow balloon are filling the sky around Frankfurt's red sandstone gothic cathedral. The bi-plane and airship are emblazoned with the initials of the organizers of the airshow, a curious suggestion of blimp advertising to follow much later in the 20th century. This was Germany's first "aeronautical exhibition " (Villard/Allen p. 37) and followed the summer when Orville Wright came to Berlin to give a flying show over Templehof Field. DFP III 2434, Villard/Allen pl. 23.
