Proessdorf was a Swedish painter and illustrator. Here, promoting "the most beautiful tourist route in Sweden," he portrays an elegantly dressed lady, rather insouciantly perched on the arm of a deck chair. Initially opened in 1832, the 120 mile long canal never lived up to its intended economic potential and was quickly outdated by the arrival of the railroads in the 1850s. Subsequently, the canal has been principally used as a tourist attraction. This is the Swedish version. Sweden 48.
