ALFRED RUSSELL
Untitled.

Color etching, engraving and screenprint, 1946. 224x150 mm; 9x6 inches, full margins. Signed, dated and numbered 59/60 in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression.

Born in 1920, Alfred Russell (1920-2007) studied at the Art Students League and earned a master's degree in art history from Columbia. He studied with Hayter at Atelier 17 in both New York and Paris. Before growing disenchanted with the Abstract Expressionist scene in the 1950s, Russell embraced abstraction and frequently converted his swirling automatist shapes, learned from Hayter, into figures, as evident in the present etching.
