WITH--A Portrait of John Marin and Stieglitz. By Herbert J. Seligmann (1891–1984). Silver print, 3 3/4x2 3/4 inches (9.5x7 cm.), inseted into a folded sheet with notations, in pencil, on the cover. Circa 1936.

Stieglitz first met Norman at The Intimate Gallery, his modernist gallery in New York City, in 1927. Although both individuals were married, their friendship quickly deepened to love. Stieglitz encouraged Norman to be a photographer and, under his mentorship, she documented events and shows at his subsequent gallery, An American Place, which operated from 1929 until his death in 1946.
