Additional Details

Waud is considered one of the most significant illustrators of the mid-19th century, known particularly for his sketches of Civil War battles. He worked for several New York newspapers, including Harper's Weekly, the New York Illustrated News and Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. This drawing, probably a preparatory sketch to be transferred to a wood block print, likely appeared in one of those papers. The Wall Street Ferry opened in 1845, running passengers from Wall Street to Montague Street in Brooklyn.
