ALICE RUSSEL GLENNY (1858-1924) WOMEN'S EDITION COURIER. 1895.
28x18 inches.
Condition B: repaired tears in margins; repaired tears, restoration and abrasions in image; creases and overpainting in image.
Trained in Paris and in New York as a painter (specializing in murals), Alice Russel Glenny designed only two posters (the other was for the Buffalo Fine Art Academy & Society of Artists). With a "firm and assured" hand, she produces a perfect archetypal Art Nouveau portrait of a woman that is less rigid than most of the American Art Nouveau images of the time. This explains the success that this image had in America and in Europe, where it was considered one of the best American posters. "The design has the cool, classical frontality that could be perfectly at home in one of McKim, Mead, and White's classical-revival buildings" (Kiehl p. 187). Maîtres pl. 60, Etrangères (with wrong attribution), Kiehl p. 34, Margolin p. 182.
