ALICE RUSSELL GLENNY (1858-1924) BUFFALO FINE ARTS ACADEMY AND SOCIETY OF ARTISTS EXHIBITION. 1897.
32 3/4x21 1/2 inches, 83 1/4x54 1/2 cm.
Condition B+: repaired tears, restored losses, creases and minor staining in margins and image and along unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds; restored loss in central image.
Trained in Paris and New York as a muralist, Alice Russell Glenny was also a sculptor and print maker. In this image, the rarer of only two posters she designed, Glenny revisits the same portrait of a woman she used in 1895 on her poster for the Women's Edition (Buffalo) Courier; she employs innovative design elements that are used to subtly break the border lines typically separating text and image. The pendant hanging from its owner's delicate neck extends boldly through the text and past the poster's inner border, a confine which is further disrupted by lively dragonflies, elevating the design to a much a higher lever than her earlier project.
