Additional Details

Martin Provensen had been employed by Walt Disney and Alice by Walter Lantz when they met in Hollywood while they were working on military training films during World War II. After many years illustrating Golden Books, the Provensens won the Caldecott Medal in 1984. Martin Provensen also drew the mascot Tony the Tiger for Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes ("They're Grrrrreat!"). Since his death in 1987, Alice Provensen has continued to produce picture books on her own.
