ALMA THOMAS (1891 - 1978)
Untitled (Abstract Composition).

Watercolor, pen and ink on thick wove paper, 1960. 380x560 mm; 15x22 inches. Strathmore watermark. Signed in ink, lower left.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private Washington, DC collection.

In Alma W. Thomas: A Retrospective of Paintings, the artist Jacob Kainen describes the great interest in these early 1960s works on paper: "At the time I was on the exhibition committee of the Dupont Theatre Art Gallery, along with Alonzo Aden and two others. We arranged shows of her watercolors for three years running, from 1960 through 1962. These works, which combined watercolor washes with pen-and-ink, served as training ground for the artist to explore color relationships and compositional possibilities. The public loved them; almost every watercolor sold." Kainen p. 31.
