This dynamic Abstract Expressionist canvas is an excellent example of Thomas's painting from the early 1960s--her oil paintings were characterized by saturated color and punctuated by rapid brushstrokes and palette knife markings. It was only in 1960 at the age of 69 that she started painting full time. In 1964, this period of painting was interrupted by a severe atttack of arthritis--an interval that led to her "mature" style and first retrospective at Howard University in 1966. Gibson p. 43.
