Charles Hallo, born in Lille, was a painter, illustrator, engraver and photographer. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, and joined the military in 1914, where he picked up photography, and eventually became a lieutenant. While he was too old for combat duty by the time World War II began, he served the Air Force as a photography instructor at the École de l'Air de Bordeaux and joined the French Resistance. After the war, Alo became best known for creating over 100 landscape posters for railway and marine companies, including PLM, Chemins de Fer and the Red Star Line.
