ALO (CHARLES HALLO, 1884-1969)

LA BAULE / LA PLAGE DU SOLEIL. 1931.

39x24 3/4 inches, 99x62 3/4 cm. Lucien Serre, Paris.
Condition A-: minor water stains at bottom edge; minor creases along vertical and horizontal folds.

Charles Hallo, born in Lille, was a painter, illustrator, engraver and photographer. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, and joined the military in 1914, where he picked up photography, and eventually became a lieutenant. After the war, Alo became best known for creating over 100 landscape posters for railway and marine companies, including PLM, Chemins de Fer and the Red Star Line. La Baule, in Brittany, is primarily known for its beach, but Alo focuses on the bay (considered one of the most beautiful in the world), depicting only a hint of the shoreline in the distance.
