Cocorico was a fashionable magazine that included a blend of essays, poetry and art. Between 1898 and 1902 sixty-three issues of the magazine were published, each with a cover designed by a well-known poster artist. In addition to the covers, the magazines were closely connected to the world of poster designers and collectors, offering for sale many posters as they came on the market. Steinlen designed the first poster to advertise sales of the magazine, and also designed various covers, as did Pal, Grün and others. Of all the great artists involved, Mucha was the major contributor. His design for the frontispiece of the magazine was used continuously from 1899; he also designed six different covers for the magazine and at least a dozen illustrations. Many of the covers were experiments in printing, often using only one color, with special inks on unusual paper. This cover for the February 15, 1899 issue was printed on silver foil. This special copy, from the collection of Jiri Mucha (the artist's son) is a trial proof that is also hand-signed by Mucha himself. Mucha R12c.
