ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) DAWN & DUSK. Set of 2 posters. 1899.
Each 18 3/8x35 1/8 inches. [F. Champenois, Paris.]
Condition varies, generally B+. Framed.
This consummate pair of maidens depicted at opposite ends of the day are a splendid and rarified vision of Mucha at the height of his sensitivity and sensuality. With delicate pastel colors in an almost monochromatic palette Mucha captures two serene, innocent and intimate moments. Only the slightest shift in the delicate colors between the two signifies the differences in atmosphere. Couched beneath the boughs of a graceful tree, these two maidens are depicted in the style of a graphic lullaby. "DAWN is represented by a girl removing the coverlet from her naked torso as she looks towards to rising sun [and] DUSK is a somnolent beauty settling down in her bed under the last rays of the day" (Rennert/Weill p. 258). On October 15, 1899, La Plume, in their Album d'affiches et d'estampes, touted these two Mucha horizontal panels for sale as the "most recently published." Only 1000 copies were printed. Rennert/Weill 70, Lendl/Paris 72.
