ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) LA CARILLON DE PÂQUES RÉVEILLE LA NATURE. 1896.
13 1/4x10 inches.
Condition B / B+: minor stain and discoloration in margins; darkened overall. Hand signed and numbered by Mucha in pencil.
"In the June 1896 catalog published by the Paris print dealer Arnould we find the announcement that this design, in color, was available for 10 francs, and that only 46 copies were printed. The design was used on the cover of the March 29, 1896 issue of Soleil du Dimanche. The title of the piece, "The Bells of Easter Awaken Nature," explains the concept of an allegorical vision, showing a maiden in a still wintry forest rapturously listening to the voices of Spring. Dimly perceived in the background are several angelic beings heralding the joyous event." (Rennert / Weill p. 64). This copy is number 16 / 46. It is being offered along with the cover for the magazine for which it was designed. Rennert /Weill 8.
