Mucha and his printer Champenois were a good business team, always looking for interesting new graphic ideas that they could sell. Having successfully designed and sold separate series depicting the seasons, they strove to come up with something new and settled on the Muses. Mucha's design is as strong and bold as ever, as he chooses to inscribe each of his muses within highly decorative circles and floral ornamentation at the top. He has left the bottom of the images virtually empty, highlighting the fluid flow of the gowns worn by each of the Muses. There is movement and grace in each of the four images that make for a strong, coherent group. Rennert/Weill 54.
