ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) REVERIE. 1897.
26 1/2x20 inches, 67x51 cm.
Condition A. Matted and framed.
This was one of Mucha's most popular designs. It exists in several variations as Champenois capitalized on its popularity and sold it to many different clients, always imprinting the new firm's name on the image. This is the variant with no text that was sold by La Plume to collectors and connoisseurs (it was listed in their catalogue Album d'Affiches et d'Estampes no. 4, for 6 francs). The image, of a young girl lost in a daydream, with an album of prints opened on her lap, is a highly decorative impression, in colors that Mucha did not often employ (oranges and yellows), and it has a peaceful, serene atmosphere. The composition is classically Mucha's, with the maiden depicted with a halo behind her (albeit larger and more intricate than usual), filled with floral stylization that mingles with the flowers she wears in her hair. Rennert/Weill 39, Gold 36.
