ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) SALAMBO. 1897. Plate from L'Estampe Moderne.
16x12 inches, 41x30 cm.
Condition B+ / B: repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins and image; restoration in margins. Japan.
Salambo was the daughter of Hamilcar, the ruler of Carthage. Gustave Flaubert popularized her story in 1862. Although the story is gruesome and bloody, Mucha's image is a visual delight, bordering on the psychedelic. Salambo, who was the high priestess of Tanit, is shown amid plumes of incense. Each of these plates is a tribute to the creativity that Mucha brought to the Estampe Moderne.
