ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) SALOMÉ. 1897. Plate from L'Estampe Moderne.
16x12 inches, 41x30 cm. Champenois, Paris.
Condition A. Paper.
For his two plates for this distinguished series Mucha chooses to depict heroines of antiquity. The image of Salomé is a sensuous image in which the dancer is shown wearing ornate jewelry and a surprisingly complex, even abstract, veil. Unlike many depictions of her, she does not carry the head of John the Baptist, but rather, is in the throes of the dance that caused Herod such great pleasure.
