ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) THE WEST END REVIEW. Magazine cover. 1898. 14x10 inches, 35 1/2x25 cm. Condition A / A-: trimmed margins; unobtrusive horizontal fold; hinged to mat at corners. Paper. Matted and framed. Mucha designed a poster of this magazine that was one of his largest lithographic endeavors, a nine-sheet poster measuring 10 feet by 7 feet. The wonderful image of a muse being inspired by a cherub beneath a palm-frond halo, was also used for a number of the magazine's covers. The periodical, which has been called a literary magazine but may have actually been a London theatrical review, was published under this name from June 1897 through September 1899.
