ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939)

TRINER'S BITTER WINE. 1907 & 1930.

21¼x13 inches, 54x33 cm. Brown & Bigelow, St. Paul, Minnesota.
Condition B: band of darkening and minor overpainting across upper image; slight darkening, creases and restoration in margins and image; calendar sheets affixed at bottom. Mounted to board. Matted and framed.

One of only two commercial projects Mucha executed during his stay in America between 1904-1912, most likely due to the fact that the proprietor of this business, Joseph Triner, was a Czech immigrant well-regarded within the foreign community. Although printed in 1907, the popularity of this image was so great that it was used for years, as exemplified by the attached calendar pages from 1930.
