ALSON SKINNER CLARK
My Chest of Drawers with a Painting by Frieseke, Paris.

Oil on canvas board, 1904. 265x346 mm; 10 1/2x13 1/2 inches.

Ex-collection private collection, New York; thence by descent to the current owner, private collection, New York.

Shortly after arriving in Paris in 1902, Clark's (1876-1949) friend and fellow American artist, Frederick Carl Frieseke (1874-1939) moved in with Clark and his wife, Medora. Frieseke soon rented the apartment above the Clarks' and enjoyed a close friendship. The two artists often provided feedback on their works in progress to each other, used each other's wives as model, and were noted to have even shared expensive formal clothing. In this work, Clark paid homage to Frieseke by including his friend's painting in the upper right of the composition.
