This is the first painting from the artist's best known series to come to auction. Alvin Hollingsworth first attracted widespread critical acclaim with this series--it went from the Harbor Gallery, Long Island to the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1970. Romare Bearden reviewed the exhibition favorably in the October 17, 1970 issue of the New York Amsterdam News. Hollingsworth was later included in the chapter of "Blackstream Artists" in Elsa Honig Fine's 1973 The Afro-American Artist. Hewitt p. 5.
