In this striking early example from his Cry City series, Hollingsworth incorporates collage and painted assemblage with a strong social realist content. The artist showed 26 paintings from his Cry City series at Terry Dintenfass Gallery, New York in 1965. Hollingsworth was also a member of the Spiral Group, the artist's group founded by Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis and Reginald Gammon in 1964, organized as a response from African-American artists to the Civil Rights movement.
