Alvin Hollingsworth, comic-strip illustrator and modern painter, was born in New York City. By the time he was twelve, he was already an artist assistant at Holyoke Publishing Company for Catman's Comics. A year later he was doing illustrations for Crime Comics. His paintings dealt with themes of contemporary social issues such as the Civil Rights Movement, women's struggles, jazz and urban life. He was also a mural designer, author, poet, and lecturer. By the mid-1950s, Hollingsworth left his nationally syndicated work in comics to pursue a career in fine art. His paintings have been exhibited at the Jewish Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, Terry Dintenfass Gallery, Ward Eggleston Gallery, each in New York. His work is in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of African Art, Washington, D.C.
