In response to his 1969 Whitney Museum of American Art show, Al Loving wrote in a 2001 essay for a Gottlieb Fellowship: "My geometric abstractions of this time represented a post graduate end to my education in western culture and art history. I was trying to evoke three-dimensional form on a two-dimensional surface. The Whitney show would force me to scramble to find my own non-ecclectic position in art."
