ALVIN D. LOVING, JR. (1935 - 2006)
Untitled (Geometric Composition).

Acrylic and paper collage on masonite board, 1968. 762x806 mm; 30x31 3/4 inches.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist, Ann Arbor, MI (1968); private collection, Rochester, NY.

The owner bought this artwork in May of 1968 from the artist's studio in Ann Arbor. Loving received his Master of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1965. Loving taught as an Assistant Professor at Eastern Michigan University before moving to New York in the fall of 1968.

This painting is a side of Loving's early abstraction that is seldom seen. Aside from his shaped canvases, between 1968-70, Loving painted these geometric hard-edge compositions. Loving pushes the edges of the pictorial plane, often incorporating the frame, around a polygon shape - another example is Variations on a Six Sided Object, 1970, in the collection of The Studio Museum in Harlem.
