ALVIN D. LOVING, JR. (1935 - 2006)
Untitled.

Diptych of acrylic on shaped cotton canvas, 1968. Approximately 1511x1753 mm and 1575x1753 mm; 59 1/2x69 inches and 62x69 inches (two irregular hexagons); together 1575x3505 mm; 62x138 inches. Both signed and inscribed "Dyptic [sic]" in pencil, verso.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist, Ann Arbor, MI (1968); private collection, Rochester, NY.

The owner bought this artwork in the summer of 1968 from the artist's studio in Ann Arbor. Loving received his Master of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1965. He also taught as an Assistant Professor at Eastern Michigan University before moving to New York in the fall of 1968.

This brightly-colored diptych is an excellent and scarce example of the large two-canvas compositions Loving created between 1968-69. The two canvases meet in the center and combine the two L-shaped compositions. A later example, Blue Rational Irrationalism, 1969, was included in his 1969 solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. A larger diptych Rational Irrationalism, 1969, was acquired by the museum that year, and is in their permanent collection.
