AMEDEO MODIGLIANI
Tristran Derème.

Pencil on wove paper. 220x180 mm; 8 3/4x7 inches. Signed in pencil, lower right. Ex-collection The Redfern Gallery, Ltd., London, with a photocopy of the original receipt of purchase, dated April, 27th, 1945; acquired by Philip L. Holliday, 27 April 1945; thence by descent to a private collection, Indiana.

A portrait of the French poet Tristan Derème (1889-1941), whose given name was Philippe Derème. He participated with the group of poets called Les Fantaisistes in 1911; Modigliani drew portraits of other members including Blaise Cendrars. The drawing is a variant of another recorded by Osvaldo Patani. Modigliani often made several drawings of the same sitter in various poses.
