AMERICAN SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY
Twilight, Salt Marshes.

Black and white chalk on paper, circa 1886-91. 280x540 mm; 11x21 1/4 inches. Ex-collection private collection, New England.

Published Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr., The Life and Work of Martin Johnson Heade, New Haven, Connecticut, 2000, pages 167-170.

This work was attributed to Martin Johnson Heade by Theodore Stebbins in the first edition of his Heade catalogue raisonné, 1975 (a second, near identical drawing was offered at Sotheby's, New York, December 3, 2008, lot 3; and reoffered on November 20, 2014, lot 61, sold for $60,000). Following a Heade symposium in 1982, the updated catalogue raisonné by Stebbins, published in 2000, attributes authorship to an unknown artist working in Heade's style.
