Untitled (from the Café Lehmitz Series).
Silver print, the image measuring 178x159 mm, 7x6¼ inches, the sheet measuring 178x235 mm, 7x9¼ inches, with Petersen's copyright stamp and a SAFTRA stamp on verso. Circa 1967-70; printed circa 1980.

Petersen is best known for his body of work made at Café Lehmitz, a bar in Hamburg. Raw and intimate, the imagery documents the late-night regulars, including prostitutes, cross-dressers, lovers, drunks, and drug addicts. The resulting photobook is regarded as one of the seminal European titles of the 20th century. Petersen co-founded SAFTRA, the Stockholm group of photographers, in 1970.
