Anderson is considered the father of American wood engraving as he pioneered the "Bewick style" of engraving in America (using a graver on a boxwood block instead of a knife on metal or wood). This volume excludes only two animals from the London edition (the Musk Bull and the Musquash) but includes four new cuts of American animals (The Hamster of Georgia, The Wild Sheep of California, The Mammoth of New York, and The Viviparous Shark of Long Island).
