Engraving. 222x273 mm; 8 3/4x10 3/4 inches, thread margins. Cross on on mount watermark. A very good impression of this scarce engraving.
Based on a design by Mantegna, known only through painted copies. There is also another engraved version of this subject after Mantegna, likely made by Zoan Andrea, from circa 1475-80, that shows the scene in a vertical setting with tormented souls to the right and a symbol of the Passion to the left, and devils above the cave opening, though with the same figure of Christ with his back to the viewer about to enter the cave (see Hind 5).
