ANDREA MANTEGNA (school of)
Four Women Dancing.

Engraving, circa 1497. 223x338 mm; 8 3/4x13 1/4 inches. Small 4-leaf clover watermark. Trimmed inside the plate mark with nearly the enitre subject preserved. A very good impression of this extremely scarce, early engraving.

The engraving is based in reverse on 4 of the 9 figures of women dancing, probably the Muses, in Mantegna's painting of Parnassus completed in 1497 and now in the Louvre, Paris.

According to Sheehan, "The work is delicate, and the print is certainly one of the best school engravings, so that the traditional attribution to Zoan Andrea is reasonable," (Early Italian Engravings from the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, 1973, pp. 228-29). Hind 21.
