During the Civil War, Andrew J. Russell was associated with the United States Military Railroad. Later he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, photographing the extension of the track line from Laramie, Wyoming, to Promontory Summit, Utah, areas that were being photographed for the first time.

Russell's remarkable images, which capture the rough-n-ready character of western towns and majestic landscapes in which they were situated, were published by the railroad in The Great West Illustrated, along with a descriptive table of contents. The allure of the West as a mining region and site for commercial development attracted migration from the East and West coasts.
