ANDREW POWER (SYBIL ANDREWS, 1898-1992) WIMBLEDON. 1933.
40x25 inches, 101 1/2x63 1/2 cm.. Waterlow & Sons Limited, London.
Condition A.
Sybil Andrews is best known for her printmaking. Her modernist linocuts, which are exceptional dynamic and geometric representations of speed and movement, reflect the influence of Futurism, Cubism and Vorticism. From 1925 to 1935, Andrews designed nine posters for the London Underground (most sources incorrectly cite her as having designed only seven). She worked under the pseudonym Andrew Power as "a tribute to Cyril Power, with whom she shared a studio and collaborated at the time" (ltmcollection.org). Of all her graphic design work, this lithe and fluid image is arguably the most consistent with her linocut designs.
