Acquired directly from the artist by Ladislas Segy in Paris, circa 1930s; thence by descent to Helena Segy. Segy, an eminent dealer and scholar of African art, built relationships with several modern artists in the 1930s and amassed a collection of self portraits both as gifts and in exchange for African artwork.
