"One of London's major annual events, the Royal Tournament was first staged in 1880 at the Royal Horticultural Hall, Islington, transferring to Earl's Court some years later. Between 1923 and 1939 the Underground issued an annual panel poster to advertise the Tournament at Earl's Court, which has remained its home ever since" (Pleasure Trips, p. 51). After studying at the École des Beaux Arts, A.E. Marty made his career as an artist in fashion - creating designs for magazines like Vogue, as well as theatre - working for the Ballet Russes and other companies designing sets, costumes, and posters. Marty designed fourteen of these small panel posters in 1933 for the London Underground, each picturing what seems to be the same fashionable mother and daughter visiting attractions and events in and out of London.
