Born in New York to recently emigrated French parents, Ruellan (1905-2006) studied at the Art Students League and early in her career--as in this work--came under the influence of Thomas Hart Benton. Later, she became associated with the artists' colony at Woodstock, NY, and her work displayed similarities with that of her friend, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and the surrealists.
