Provenance: Likely acquired directly from the artist, New York, by Norman Dolph, New York; thence by descent to the current owner.
Warhol's (1928-1987) Cow color screenprint was published for an exhibition at Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, April 2-April 27, 1966. During this time in mid-April, Norman Dolph was recording the Velvet Underground at Scepter Studios, New York, and the bulk of the songs that would make up their first album, The Velvet Underground & Nico. Warhol and Dolph financed the project and were a driving force behind the album's release in March 1967. Warhol took a more hands-off role in the production (protectively allowing the band artistic free range in the studio) and designed the now-famous banana print cover, while Dolph acted as both a sound engineer and tireless promoter of the recordings, ultimately persuading Verve Records to release the album (Columbia Records, Atlantic Records and Elektra Records all passed on the recordings).
