ANDY WARHOL
Henry Geldzahler.

Polaroid, late 1970s. 108x85 mm; 4 1/4x3 1/4 inches. Initialed in felt-tip pen and black ink, lower left. Numbered "A 915861 P" verso. Ex-collection Henry Geldzahler, New York; private collection, London.

As a young curator of American art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Geldzahler (1935-1994) organized the landmark 1969 exhibition "New York Painting and Sculpture: 1940-1970." He soon became close with many artists in the New York scene, Abstract Expressionists, Pop Artists, performance artists and more. He was appointed Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for New York City by Mayor Edward I. Koch from 1977 to 1982.

In this wonderfully candid Polaroid, he is shown wearing his Commissioner of Cultural Affairs badge.
