ANGELO JANK (1868-1940) LUSTIGE BLAETTER. 1898.
27x18 3/4 inches. Wolf & Son, Munich.
Condition A: creases and wrinkles in margins.
Jank lived in Munich and was primarily a painter known for his representations of horses. At the beginning of his career he designed a poster for the magazine Jugend<> (for whom he worked) and also designed the first poster for the Berlin based Lustige Blätter<>, a periodical that, throughout its life span, attracted some of Germany's best poster artists, including Julius Klinger. This sparing, yet bold and graphic image of a jester, is utilized as part of a poster that is more hardselling than artistic, as two-thirds of the image is devoted to the text. A classic German document. DFP III, 1541.
